March 2023

The Guild meeting was held on March 7 with 26 members either in person or on Zoom. Colleen chaired the meeting with technical assistance from Jaynie. Ruth reported on hanging quilts at the Estevan Fair June 9-11, and we could also hang quilts at the Weyburn Fair. Ruth will collect fabric scraps for a friend to make dog beds. Jaynie reported we have been accepted for an Art Farm grant.

There will be a Feather’s Class by Christa Marcotte on April 15; and there will be another “Sleep in Your Own Bed” Retreat on March 24-26. The Circle Square Retreat is booked for October 13-16.

For the Program, a number of members shared some of their Favourite Things, useful items that they use in quilting. Thanks to all who shared! Also, Debbie shared information on how to scan documents onto your cell phone.

Show and Tell

We enjoyed seeing projects that members have completed during the past month.

Marg has been finishing a few seasonal items from her cupboard. The first item she showed is a spring centre piece, a “Fold and Stitch Leaf Topper” by Poorhouse Quilt Designs that Marg made with Bosal filler that she had, plus pastel batiks.

A second item Marg showed was a fall wall hanging made from a kit she purchased years ago at a Quilt Show. The pattern is “Pumpkin Patch” by Dana Verrengia of Wildfire Designs Alaska. Marg enjoys doing applique.

Charlene showed a lovely Queen sized quilt that used a panel in the centre framed by an attractive arrangement of 4.5 inch squares and half square triangles. Mary Jane had given Charlene the pattern for the outer edge framing. The backing is a grey flannel. Terry Whitman did the long arm quilting. Very striking!

Ruth has pieced the Mystery Quilt lap quilt top, “Typsy Diamonds” by Tannis Fahlman. Ruth’s colours are very pretty!

Colleen has completed this beautiful Double sized quilt that was made with 2,500 pieces. This was a Bonnie Hunter Mystery Quilt 2022 called Chilhowie. Colleen used scraps and background fabric of tone on tone white from her stash. Her colours are appropriate for the irises that grow in Bonnie Hunter’s area. The backing is a lavender flannel. Clues were given starting November 21 and then one clue was given each week. The final layout was revealed the second week in January. Colleen found her cutting and piecing accuracy skills improved from working with small pieces. She thought of adding borders to make it larger, but it didn’t look good so this is large enough to lay on top of a Queen bed. She did the long arm quilting herself and added the borders. She will be donating it to a Silent Auction to raise money for Nashi, a Saskatoon charity organization that raises money for a Home for Girls in Ukraine (now in Poland) to protect girls from sex trafficking. What a beautiful gift!

Verla made this 3 Yard lap quilt, “In a Flash” for her sister-in-law in memory of her husband. The colours were chosen as they are favourites: her sister-in-law likes purple and he liked blue. The backing is Minkee. Colleen did the long arm quilting and it looks like waves which reminds Verla of the ocean and they had taken trips together.

Verla also made a Walker Caddie to give to Charity.

Trudi showed a pretty table runner that she has designed and made for the TLC Art and Craft Fair in Moose Jaw. She used half Fat eights strips. The quilting she did is “match stick” quilting. Trudi was the winner of the UFO draw.

Trudi also showed two sets of placemats that she designed and quilted. She tried to come up with a simple pattern that would showcase the fabrics, a line called “Pollinate”. Each placemat is different. The placemats look “Balanced but not Uniform!” Lovely, Trudi!

Ruth has been very busy! She showed her Fidget Mat that she made to look “manly” that will be donated to the Alzheimer patients. Also she has finished three colourful Welcome bags that will be donated to the Special Care Home.

The next Guild Meeting will be on April 4.

We look forward to having a guest presenter, Tanis Fahlman a quilt designer, join us!

Happy Quilting!
