February 2023

The regular Crocus Quilters Guild meeting was held on February 7 and there were approximately 30 members in attendance either in person or on Zoom. The Program included three interesting videos including Terry Rowland’s video on using Selvages; Chelsea from North Dakota’s video on tips for adding Borders to a quilt; and Deb Tucker’s video on how to use the Wedge Star Ruler which is a ruler that our Guild has in its library.

Packages of fabric, batting and a pattern are available to make bags to donate to the Special Care Home new comers, plus there is a pattern available to make carry bags to go on walkers. More Sensory or Fidget Mats are welcome as well.

The next “Sleep in Your Own Bed Retreat” will be on February 24-26, and all are welcome to attend.

Show and Tell

At the meeting, five Mystery Quilts using the lap quilt pattern “Tipsy Diamonds” by Tannis Fahlman were displayed. Most of the girls worked on theirs at the January “Sleep in Your Own Bed” Retreat. The pattern looks complicated, but the girls found it easy and fun to do. It is interesting to see the variety of colours the girls used and the beautiful effects they each created.

The first Mystery Quilt shown below was Colleen’s and all of her fabrics came from her stash — Yeah! Colleen quilted it herself using a longarm design “Feathers”, which appropriately goes with the fabric in the squares and border.

Judy pieced her Tipsy Diamond quilt at the Retreat and she hasn’t finished it yet. The colours are very striking!

Leanne A. loved this pattern and the fabrics which she had in her stash. The quilt is going to be delivered to a birthday girl who is getting a new house this spring. Leanne quilted it herself and the backing is flannel.

Below is Leeann M.’s “Cotton and Steel” fabric Mystery Quilt. Colleen will be doing the longarm quilting on this quilt.

The fifth Mystery Quilt shown is Jill’s and she made hers larger by doubling the small size. This quilt will be a wedding gift for her cousin in England. Jill used red in this quilt as that is her cousin’s favourite colour, and her cousin loves Disney so the black and white squares have a Mickey Mouse design.

Leanne A. showed a lap “3 Yard Quilt” from the Fabric Cafe. She said this pattern is easily done in a weekend. Leanne quilted it herself and she used a grey fleece blanket (with a one way stretch) as the backing.

To get back to quilting, Marg wanted to make a small item and so she made this table centre using the pattern “Waffle Time” by Atkinson Designs. She had this cute ‘cats with hats’ fat quarter and she wanted to avoid cutting the cats very much, so this pattern worked well.

Our Guild still needs more Sensory or Fidget Mats to donate for Alzheimer patients. A number of the mats were shown in December. Marg and Eileen each finished one and showed their creations. There are lots of different textures and a variety of attached items to feel and fiddle with!

Charlene used a panel and the pattern “Eagle Flies” to make this beautiful lap quilt for a Christmas gift for her son! His wife purchased the panel from the Melville Quilt shop, and the fabric is from Mama Bears. The striking border had a lot of small pieces and Charlene made the border by doing it without so many cut pieces. She was short of fabric but she was happy to get the same fabric in Moose Jaw. Terry Whitman did the long arm quilting!

Many years ago Verla purchased this “Hopscotch” pattern and flannel fabric as a kit from the The Quilt Patch at one of our Quilt Shows. The backing is Fireside. This is a true UFO! Congratulations, Verla, on completing this lovely quilt!

Diana S. showed two table runners that she has completed. The first one is a colourful Christmas one that uses the 60 Degree Ruler. Terry Whitman did the long arm quilting which includes some pretty snowflake designs. The second runner with “dog” designs from Jordan’s Fabrics is called “Peek-A-Boo” and has Prairie Points for the edging. Well done, Diana!

To complement and illustrate the video by Terry Rowland we viewed at the meeting, Ruth B. showed her interesting items that she has made using Selvage edges. Ruth created her own designs. She made a big strong bag to carry her quilting to Retreats by joining squares made with selvages on the diagonal. She made a snap bag trimmed in green, and she made a chair cover with elastic around the edge. As an example, Ruth showed a dryer sheet with selvages attached. The selvages give a very unique colourful look! That is a lot of sewing!

Thanks to all who shared their quilting items!

The next Guild meeting will be on March 7.

Stay safe and happy quilting!
